Docker Hub's access token vulnerability: how signing let me verify my images

A critical bug in Docker Hub's access controls meant some personal access tokens, including the ones I use to publish compose-lint, a security linter for Docker Compose files, could have been used by someone else. Not the email you want on a Friday afternoon. I actually got two of them on Friday, October 2, about an hour apart. The one I happened to open first was addressed to me as the organization owner. It was pretty vague and said there was no action for me to take, so I skimmed it and moved

Webhook-Free OTP Login: Polling Status and SMS Verification Implications

The most important trade-off is template ownership: keep password-reset copy and expiry rules in the edtech application, even if a messaging service renders or transports the SMS. TL;DR: when a provider has no delivery webhooks, polling improves operational visibility, but it must never decide whether a reset credential is valid. Your state machine should own issuance, verification, expiry, retry, and abuse controls. Provider status is delayed transport evidence, not authentication truth. Pic

The CMK vs AWS-managed key trap in HIPAA S3

✓ Human-authored analysis; AI used for formatting and proofreading. "Which KMS key should I use for PHI in S3? We're using the default aws/s3 managed key. Our auditor is asking about key management but SSE-KMS is SSE-KMS, right?" Wrong. The difference between an AWS-managed key and a customer-managed key (CMK) is the difference between having and not having a breach containment option. S3 offers three encryption options: SSE-S3 (AES-256) -- AWS manages everything. No KMS involvement. SSE-KMS wit

"Sign in with Google": Why It Bounces You Out and Back

You click "Sign in with Google." The page jumps away, jumps back a second later, and you are in. So why the round trip — why not just type something on this page? Because the safe way is to never hand over your password. Twenty years ago, if a site wanted to read your data somewhere else, you gave it your password. Convenient — and costly: It stored your password, sometimes in plaintext. It got the full set, so it could do things you never agreed to. To undo it, you could only change your passwo

Securing a small shop LAN app: network basics for a business VM

A lot of small businesses now run their core software as a virtual machine on a computer in the back room.
